Around the time of his sixteenth birthday, his parents told him what Lord Shiva had said to them. As was prophesized, this child was a prodigy and became an accomplished Yogi. The couple chose the former and in due time, a child was born. When Lord Shiva appeared to them to answer their request, he gave them a choice between a child who would be spiritually accomplished but die young and a long-lived child who would be witless and self-absorbed. Markandeya was the child of a forest-dwelling couple who undertook a long penance to earn the boon of a child.
